LA TIERRA QUE SE ABRE

Manando

Mientras sombras largamente dolientes guardan silencio

Tordos estallan desde una pirotecnia de llamados

Capullos trepan muros divisorios

a esperar a mi mujer

Almas agonizantes exigen reencarnar

Caen gotas filosas y puntudas

lugares despejados dónde poner nuestras mesas y sillas

pozos profundos, corrientes y ríos, lagunas y charcos

mientras silenciosamente evoca a padres y abuelos

The Opening Ground

Gushing

between the screams of ephemeral belts of land

the riverbed writhes in waning light

dusk holds day tight in its mouth

fire convulses

fiercely ascending the tree tops

scorching the buds

A flight of birds spreads across the sky

so thoughts can reign on earth

where the wind’s face meets a bowed hill top

a deep cavern exhales myths to morning dew

ponds and puddles find a heavenly direction

the river gives birth while flowing

An open embrace of waves

playing in childish ebullience

the water surface turns to ruins

You set up an already broken sun

Drifting...

An unknown silence is drifting by

the lamp wick shortens

as kerosene soot says its last words

I vaguely hear the boiling batch of herb saying its apology

Erupting...

A flower opens vast expanses of land.

The Soul Flew Away...

...

A spider’s hammock being torn by the lifting fog

Returns freedom to the soft tongues of grass

The drifting clouds rub out

A horizon that has just buried darkness

Blood resurrected within the ground

Turns into young sap welling up at each falling leaf

While long-suffering shadows remain silent

The thrush bursts out a firework of calls

Buds are shooting up dividing walls

As arteries of streams clear and circulate

Tongues made of glass break into voices

To discuss each discolored photo

The words in a notebook having dreamed of fire

Just before they become ashes, suddenly come to

When moving out, one has tossed the incense sticks’ leftovers into the river

So one wonders why fragrant smoke still lingers…

Variations on a Rainy Night

Rain comes at last

And thunder rumbles

Tender shoots strip naked in darkness

The land tries to hide its barren dryness

When roots feel their way into our chest

Together we desire

And together we recall

A leafy cone hat and raincoat or lightning across the sky

Night lies down with all the tombs

Its black shirt still hung in the trees

Together things cool down

And together things echo

The sounds get lost inside our deep sleep

Where countless upside-down dreams are shattered

In this cool, expanding, reverberating rain water.

At the Root of the World

For Susan & Bruce Blanshard

I see at the top of the hill

A beardgrass flower just bloomed

Light emanates from there

Dawn emanates from there

And illuminates the foot of the hill, a forest exit

Birds depart in the early morning

I too have just left my memories

Not from anywhere else

But from that very beardgrass flower

An extremely beautiful day is forming

I walk to the nearest café

To wait for my woman

And for a long time I look towards the hill

True, very true

All of us were born there.

Summer is Near

The paths are condescending

A statue wrapped tightly in the scent of aquilegia

Disappears without a trace

A drizzle inhales and exhales

Covering his mouth, she says:

- Don’t sing any more lyrics that have become carbon dioxide!

Turned off

He follows a plough that is floating in fog

Buffalo horns rise up from dark corners

Lift up the soil so grass can grow

Blow warm air into decay

Agonizing souls demand to reincarnate

A dog’s tail waves a small alley’s flag.

A house is dreaming to wear another house upon itself

Birds that hear a gun cocking among trees hide in a cloud roasting in the frying pan of sunset

Shipworms choked on smoke open their mouths to discuss the immortality of water and the transience of ships

A bear hugging a beehive drops from the treetop to where a trap has been set

Buffaloes bulge up within the ground

When the rope of time is stretched

It explodes on the hard surface

Fire rises high from the clouds

Souls are cremated for the last time

Someone is stretching out his arms

And speaks endlessly without making a sound.

From Raindrops

Through the air with so many perspectives

Raindrops fall sharp and pointed

The light blue sky has been blemished

In an instant the usual horizon is wiped to a blur

Hesitating to break, some raindrops fall inside me

Turn into pebbles running all over my body

The roar of blood in my mercury hand

Is flesh and bones or smoldering limestone

It bubbles. It crackles. It’s smashed

Heat rises up to the sky in a rage

Anxiety no longer has any meaning

Change has surpassed capacity

No time to reflect, no time to fathom

I am sunk by the rain, washed away with it

Suddenly I see myself in others’ cries

Their mouths the shape of fetuses, seeds, and stamens…

On Pole Tops

My tongue is tied

to a pole top

so each time I speak

the tongue has to contract

pulling this obese body up

I thrash like a piece of cloth tossing in strong winds.

As I think about my tongue’s pain

a butterfly forms on a stone ledge

Its trembling rosy wings shake the stone embankment

Then a billboard advertising a carbonated power drink

Boasts high quality ingredients for performance

From another fanciful place

A girl twists her back inside a calendar cover

She smiles and holds her hand up for a long time.

I exist because of the butterfly, billboard and unknown girl

They speak for me

Now the root of my tongue is an abyss.

But why do they exist on their own?

Maybe their tongues are hung from other pole tops.

Notes Taken at the Great Wall

Clouds are stacked like heavy boulders on my shoulders

My eyes blurring in the blowing sands

which fill my lungs with every breath

Is the Great Wall still being built?

In the air the voice of a eunuch blasts out a decree

Anyone who creates poetry while carrying boulders

will be beaten until they spew out blood

End of decree!

Looking up I see a sagging face

cold hands, leaden eyes, gravel voice

The roof of a beacon tower in crimson red

bares the shape of a bloody blue dragon saber on his neck

I bend my back to cart sunlight away

I thrust my legs to cart wind away

Anything to get near that flower

waving lively in strong wind.

Your Majesty / Dear Sir / Reporting to Comrade...

This lowly officer / base citizen / humble self...

will fulfill his responsibilities

Whether this is the top of sky

or bottom of abyss

I only feel your burning whip lash on my back

On gray stone, travelers’ sweat

blooms into poppies.

Turning with the Roof

I wake up at night in the room. Wooden furniture bristling with wood ear fungus. A statue sinks into a flabby clump of soil. A hand-held fan opens for the last time and closes down into a bamboo tube. In the dark, voices of deceased artisans are echoing:

- Let’s turn with the roof and wake all objects up!

I turn with the bottles, animal figures, light bulbs... through the lips of a glassblower, through trembling letters watching paper powder sinking in bleach. Ink drops gather then spread like an oil stain. A formal suit of clothes slouches. This is the time to reflect on the nature of silk and cotton plants. Darkness swallows all stale food, without any concept of culinary culture. Teas fragrance returns to the forest. Water howls with rage inside an earthenware pot with a broken base.

The turning objects cannot stop themselves. The turning trash can gets stuck to a photograph frame, a ceiling fan, the telephone cords. A pair of underpants gets stuck between crockery cabinet and exercise machine. An exhausted broom, mosquito repellent canister, and several CDs end up inside the refrigerator. A fish stopped breathing near the end of its journey to the window. Little mice drown swimming across a frying pan. Washer detergent powder turns and sprinkles itself on vegetables, knives, cutting board, and the altar. A dipping cup turns together with one piece of tofu. A jar of hot chilli sauce flings itself upside down. And the second hand turns much slower than the hour hand.

Everybody wakes up while turning. They still have time to drink water and wash their face. Each picks a random object. And quickly place their feet on the Starting line.

From Our Home

You gather things according to their seasons

a bunch of grapefruit flowers for autumn

plums for spring

We are the pulse of air, deep abyss, breasts of soil

we choose warm places to set our furniture

uncluttered places to put our tables and chairs

We drop our worries at the dinner table

with chopsticks we pick vegetables from the field afar

the fish bites on the bait inside our clay pot

We love the footprints near the rice stubble

deep wells, streams and rivers, ponds and puddles

Don't sit in the room too long

go out into the field, out to the riverbank

where leaves grow green and fish wriggle

Bite on fresh pineapple or sweet orange

and let juice drop on brown soil.

The Story is Not Over

The cockroach crawled around me and said

it was just reincarnated for three months

and in the previous life it had been a decent person

A decent person, why resigned to a flattened fate?

I did not believe and swung the door-frame

Where is your witness? Your evidence?

The cockroach raised one of its hairy legs

yes, it might be taken for an arm

struggling from an iron vice,

or protruding from a luxury vest

of a person with a large mouth and an upright back

walking with broad steps and stiff knees

I had to continue imagining

for fear of being struck with blindness

The cockroach and I both joined a scientific conference

both wore mouthpieces, both watched flowers,

both lured birds, and overcame effects

both wiped sweat, and both predicted

The cockroach and me were even from now on

It moulted. I was insensitive.

It nibbled. I was submerged.

It climbed the wall. I had petty hatred.

It eliminated. I made foul play.

It was stinking. I was stubborn.

It was probing. I cleared the way.

It was overbearing. I was stupid.

Hearing You on the Phone

On the phone your voice sounds clear and light

A drop of water just absorbed

A sprout just emerged

A ripe fruit just dropped down

A spring just flowing on

In the distance, at the other end of the line, there are rice-fields, villagers carrying bamboo poles and baskets. Vehicles and towers. Deep roots. Your voice does not cross over them but turns them into miniatures, and opens passage doors of communication between them. I hear you and with the help of deep roots, I can open up multiple sacred layers inside the warm earth; the river flows into the poles and baskets; the villages give birth to towers of fertility; the rice fields are green against traffic vehicles.

Please say more spontaneous nonsense to me.

In a moment when you put down the receiver, perhaps all things would dissolve away or return to the way they were

Only left with the rippling of waves far away

Only left with the chlorophyll dispersing

Only left with the fragrance of tenderness

And the rocky banks in all their trembling

Closed Eyes

With closed eyes the world appears unpolluted. The surrounding pure spaces are spreading and latticed. We see ourselves in childhood holding a bright candle in the church. The candlelight is filling eye-sockets, filling the hollow immobile gaps amidst secret verdant foliage. With closed eyes the forest resembles a garden. The rattan stems, the ferns and wild grasses take the shape of huge ancient trees. The needle leaves form a large canopy. The earth bee, the porcupine, the squirrel, and the bull are similar shapes… And I stayed motionless for a long time with my eyes closed. Even though my premonition had warned me, they were looking for a clue, fanning the wind, taking fright… With closed eyes we can see people and all things in justice and in a clear light. Pens and books, beds and drawers, knives and chopping boards, and the old bike were of the same size. Each human organ opens up with multiple strange eyes, while the venoms absorbed are permanently sealed up with no way of escape. With closed eyes you are not so busy as when I am with open eyes. But your silence makes queer resounding sounds, telling me that your love has penetrated the trees, the streets and houses, the gardens, the fields, and the rivers and springs… From now on we need not doubt anything until we close our eyes forever.

New Year Bath

without attaining purity after continuous purifications

I returned to take a bath with the lamp

I moved my shoulders towards the light

then both hands

my feet, my chin, my knees

even both eyes and my dry coughing

pouring light into all hidden recesses

each of them working as a germinator of sprouts

as a forge to temper hot iron with water

as an incubator for eggs

as a grafted trunk sticking out lateral branches

taking a bath to welcome the new Spring

immersing oneself in light

while silently evoking grandparents and parents

the body rises towards the lamp

light pours profusely while I called your name

it was hovering in pregnancy

I tried to call somebody in the faraway region

the still lamp became all the more brighter

and brighter.

The Song of Harvest

Spreading quickly, overwhelming reclaimed virgin land

You drop one burst of wild flower after another

to whirl me up from the house with its small garden

The birds cut up immense space and leave lines of endless flight

My roots reach up to your verdant eyes

Every sprout sprays warmth to wet the bosom of earth

from the breathing that transforms the sky

from the empty sky that builds clouds up

The thatch eyes burn up the old crop

To change our vision and the vacant horizon

The earth accepts all burning cinders

The new season comes with self-confidence, grinding and wiping out all

The kiss is silent, radiating heat and boring into entrails of earth

touching underground veins swollen with old mysteries

The fertile earth fused with dawn offers up a face

with exuberant plants and trees in profusion

The seasons of resurrection are pregnant with ripe ears of paddy

The thunder bursts out in the palm seeds

The cycle of fresh alluvium embraces fibres of earth

You bow down and all of a sudden, the river rushes in.

...

Võng nhện sương tan xé rách

Lưỡi cỏ mềm tự do.

Một bông cỏ may vừa nở

Mà chính từ bông cỏ may kia

hình thanh long đao dính máu đang kề cổ
