Should a poet think of his responsibility or mission upon his poetic creation?

(Interviewed by poet Nguyễn Đức Tùng)

1- What do you seek in a poem? And do you often find it?

- Mai Văn Phấn (MVP): I am fond of this sentence from poet Du Fu (China) : If my words can’t shake others’ heart and mind, I’ll never have a peaceful death. One often meets interesting verses unexpectedly, not wilfully. The thing remaining in the reader’s mind after reading a poem is its author’s personality. In my opinion, the training of personality is much more important than the training of composition skills. In the great poets, the personality is clearly shown even in the issues seeming not worth to be talked of or to have nothing to be said about. Those great poets, though living and composing in different times, spaces or regimes, still meet one another in the explanation of great issues which are fairly uniform and concrete. I also often attach special importance to the wisdom in verses. I have found the poetic wisdom model in the Liturgical Books of the religions, chiefly the Old Testament, the Veda and the epics such as Iliade, Mahbharata…In nature, they were psalms so supernatural that many people in the later generations have had doubts about their authors’s presence on the world. Those classic works has supported poetry to survive all the worst time limits of the mankind; and supported the readers to be wiser and nobler which the majority of the contemporary poets can’t perform.

2- How do you assess the poetries in the North and the South of  the past as well as the poetries at home and abroad of today, especially from the viewpoint of a man not standing in the same political-geographical region (for example, a person living at home looks at the overseas poetry, or a person living abroad reads the domestic verses)

- MVP: I don’t think of the poets’ geographical nature and political view. I just pay attention to concrete works. There was a tragic time to poetry when poetry was just like poetry, or more correctly, it was just a kind of “false poetry”. Someone can adduce any mission of poetry to strongly plead for that poetic nominal abusiveness, but I would like to refuse to discuss with him. I’ll calmly wait for the time when our national literary history has a very severe liquidation to fix a value to the poetry of that time. I don’t make any assessment of the “two region’s poetries” because it is not necessary but have a brief comment : In that time, Northern poetic composers were like an arsenal’s workers, who day and night forged their verses so that each line of their verses could become “a bullet to be fired at the enemy’s head”. Some of them came to the verses of Maiakovsky, Aragon, Neruda…just to learn how to machine their verses into bullets. Also in that time, in the South, a famous poet bore an aspiration of marching to the North for “the bayonet full up of blood to be washed in West Lake’s water” ect. And there were many poems mentioning the outpost’s soldiers taking pity on their old mothers killed by the enemy’s bullets and missing their sad black-eyed girl-friends in blue dresses (the models remaining from the time of New Verses)...When enforcedly or willingly standing behind the non-poetic purposes, poetry will simply be a tool, not poetry any more though it is very useful. Even poet Henric Heine when using his verses to attack the then German dictatorship with the lines : “Throwing the fatherland into the blazing flames and boiling water / And boasting about an unreal universe / you are spat as a gang of deceivers / and mocked by the whole world as “raving idiots” ect, it doesn’t mean he was composing verses, though Heine is a famouse poet (in my memory, poet Te Hanh translated this poem). Time flies but it leaves very few poet titles to the poetry of Vietnam in general. Therefore, in my opinion, we shouldn’t make a clear cut as the Northern poetry or the Southern poetry, the overseas poetry or the domestic poetry. We should just recognize a sad reality that there are rarely concrete figures for us to present for a “bet” on our national spirit.

3. What is an interesting poem in your opinion? Please, give an example (not with yours) and explain it.

- MVP: As to this idea, I have stated above already. An interesting poem or even an interesting line of verse will make the reader wiser and nobler. I would like to pick out by mere chance a line of verse from a deceased poet : “Afer falling down...my dear, I was still on the ground !” (An improvised line of verse from poet Duy Khan, when he got a fall in the drunk state).

4. What is a mediocre poem in your opinion? Please, give an example and explain it.

- MVP : In my opinion, it is not necessary to put forth this question though not all the poetic composers understand what is a mediocre poem. Because, it is an evident truth : what is not interesting will be mediocre. As to poetry, a so-so, passable, tolerable poem means a mediocre poem.

5. There are many ideas opposite to one another on the Vietnamese poetry nowadays. In general, do you get disappointments or hopes on it ? Why?

- MVP: We are standing on a poetry base which is rather low and not stable in theory. The majority of the poetic composers are weak in knowledge, culture and skills of a modern poet. Now, most of us still stick to their  emotion, instinct and enthusiasm of “performing” verses. That the reality creates interesting verses is just a matter of luck, and in  the modern poet community, there will not be any place for us if there is not a strong impact to this languid situation.

6. What do you think about the Post-modernism trend in poetry ? What is the Post-modernism trend’s influence on some current poetic flows such as the Sai Gon young poetry, the mocking poetry, or on some concrete authors?

- MVP: Post-modernism is one of the pioneer trends appearing over half a century ago. It advocates the breaking of the uniform rationality, the monopolar nature, the overall ruling nature ect to set up a multipolar and multi-stratum world ect. As to the purpose, Post-modernism is just a transitional period to reach the agreement and unity at a higher level, too ect. It affects not only literature but also movie, architecture, music and painting ect. The verses of Post-modernism appeared in the condition that Post-modernism newly shot forth in Vietnam but it has created a public opinion in the literary life. It helps new writers know their position and course; and, it even helps the former generations know how to get tired of themselves, too.

7. We can’t avoid mentioning the experimental tendencies such as the language poetry, the concrete poetry, the performance poetry ect. What do you think about them, opposing or supporting?

- MVP: All the composition tendencies are very necessary and enrich our poetry. Now we still have doubts because there are very few talents for the persuasive “experiments”. The term “experiment” here, in my mind, is not used properly and fairly by us for the successful works. Of course, in the civilized time, the discoveries and creations will be encouraged and supported. But the boundary between the real talent and the mediocrity, vulgarity in the art is often difficultly recognized.

8. How about the translation of the world verses into Vietnamese, sir ? What should we do for the readers to know more about the foreign verses ? What foreign poet’s works do you often read or what foreign poet affects you most ? On the other hand, what about the introduction situation of Vietnamese verses to the world?

- MVP: The translators who have translated the world verses into Vietnamese have a great merit to the contemporary poetry. But reading many foreign poets’ works translated by only one Vietnamese translator, I often found the same voice in the use of language, rhythm ect while every poet clearly has his own style. The verse translation is by its nature is a problem, because it is the matter of heart and soul. There are rare cases as the same as the translator – poet Hoang Ngoc Bien who has found the specific style in Joseph Brodsky’s verses. At present, fairly many young poets and readers are able to read foreign verses in original. That is the best way to receive real verses. As the same as other poets, I have also experienced the transitional phases. In each new period, I often seek to read the foreign poets’ works close to me so that I can receive a certain encouragement as well as a suggestion to be able to discover new things. But, I haven’t liked any poet completely and I myself find that I have never been affected by any of them yet.

9. What role does the poetic review and argument act in the poetry development? What about the verse introduction, publication and propagation nowadays? Is there any article, book, project or conference on verses in the recent time that you have read or observed and felt most interesting? Why?

- MVP: I don’t want to talk about the review and argument’s role to poetry, because I am wondering whether we have had a literary review argument base or not? I myself see that I am never indifferent to the Vietnamese poetry (because I am composing Vietnamese verses now !). But to tell the truth, though I always make a careful observation, until now I have never been surprised at, or at least my heart has beaten faster than usual due to any poetic phenomenon, though there are rather many poetic phenomena in our country.

10. The poet and his social responsibility: What do you think about this issue?

- MVP: Verse is the sounds of Nature : the wind’s blowing, the bird’s singing, the volcano’s eruption, the wave’s rise, the rock’s slide... is the time of sexual excitement, the Male prancing onto the Female... Upon my poetic creation, I never think of any responsibility or mission at all.
