Silence

16.

Je suis zazen près d'une fleur
tous les parfums
flottent près du sol

Le ciel tourne sur ma tête
je suis obstacle

Tout pousse autour de moi
je vieillis

Une fleur au milieu
érection d'un poteau de verre
marque l’aujourd'hui
maintenant

Passé

avenir
regardez-vous

Fleur, lèvres de Bouddha.

Explication

 Silence

16.

I am in zazen next to a flower

All fragrance lingers

Near the ground

The sky turns over my head

I am turning into an obstacle

Things around me growing

Getting older

The flower in the middle

Erects a glass post

Marking today

Now

Past

And future

Look at each other from two sides

The flower represents Buddha’s lips.

Explication

The poet is in zazen. The practitioners sit zazen commonly in a group in the meditation hall or zendo in a zen temple. To sit zazen means to sit like a mountain. The poet sits in zazen beside a flower. May be the flower that blooms in the morning droops in the evening. Hence the flower reminds of the impermanence of every thing. Despite that the beauty in a flower evokes thoughts that beggar description. Flowers stand for tenderness compassion love and self expression. This is not all. The Flower Sermon points out that reality is ineffable. And the real can be communicated only through silence. Hence our present cluster of poems are the throatful voice of silence. Nature is the zendo for the poet. The fragrance of the flower lingers near the ground. Curiously enough according to Hindu point of view there are five elements that constitute the world. Earth is one of them and its quality is fragrance. No wonder the fragrance lingers on the ground. But nay, the best of fragrance is virtue. And virtues seem to generate from the elysian flower on earth. And the sky turns over the poet’s head. What could be the sky? The sky is infinite space without any content. The sky turns over. That is, the other side of void or emptiness is revealed before the poet. Emptiness means being interconnected. It speaks of wonderful fullness of the sky. It speaks of the wonderfulness of the Buddha mind. In the face of the fullness or emptiness the poet is still aware of himself. Consequently the poet turns into an obstacle. The awareness of  the self stands in the way of the poets realization of the emptiness. Ergo he is stuck up in the maze of forms and he finds things around him growing  old. That is, he is aware of time. Emptiness implies absence of all forms and absence of time and space. When emptiness turns over its other side is revealed which implies myriads of forms in time and space. And the flower in the middle raises a glass post as a marker. It marks the post as present marking the now of today. Once there are the name and form of rupaloka or once the world of forms show up, there appears the past and future. Feeling perception intention contact and attention constitute the name. Form is dependant on them. The awareness of affirmation or the present is flanked by two negative phenomena. The one existent phenomenon is flanked between two non existent phenomena. And lo! Past and future look at each other. In other words in this world of name and form rolling in time past and future are dependent on  each other. Nothing has independent entity. There is no substance anywhere. The theory of Dependent Origination experienced by the poet  leads us the readers to realize  emptiness. And when nothing exists Buddha alone exists. Buddha is the flower whose fragrance had earlier engrossed the poet. Buddha’s compassion for mankind and earth has been evident from the fact that the fragrance of flowers lingers on the ground. Buddha is the creator of the countless fragments that crowd the existence. It is he who puts the marker of the present and at once creates the past and future. At the same he shows how the past and future are dependent on each other. Thus since everything is dependent on something else nothing is substance. Buddha alone remains a flower through which the existence is and yet through which the existence disappears. One fails to describe world. It is and is not. One fails to describe the Enlightened One or Buddha, his omniscience and detachment.

Tĩnh lặng

16.
