Silence

12.

A spider web is spun

Between two ends of thunder

Within a bullet’s echo

An electric hammer’s thud

A train’s screeching jolt

The sound of an asteroid falling on earth

A shiny thread is stretched out

In countless fleeting

Disappearing sounds

Only the spider turns back

And spins more threads.

(Translated from Vietnamese by Nhat-Lang Le & Susan Blanshard)

Explication

Thunder is a very complex event. Sometimes the water particles borne by clouds turn into ice particles and they bump into each other. They cause huge amount of electricity that creates a channel through the air to touch the ground and then the electricity returns along the same channel. In the meantime the air expands because of heat. With the waning of the electricity the air seeks to recoup its former state of equilibrium and there is tremendous sonic vibration that can be heard even 15 kilometers away in rural areas. This might be an experience of meditation in the Vajrayana or Tantra. According to Tantra when the coiled energy (or Chi?) travels through the susumna nadi or the central channel ranging from perineum upwards and touches certain chakras there is light. The poet becomes electrified. The susumna nadi is the channel along the vertebra through which the electricity travels and there is a convulsion of the whole being. Anahata chakra or heart chakra is charged  thereby and there is the thunder within. Commonly sound is generated through friction But according to zen there could be clap with one hand. This is the Word. In the beginning there was the Word and God said Let there be light and there was light. The Word here is an inarticulate sound. It is the thunder that Moses decoded. Thunder comes as a crack But sometimes there is rumbling and brontide. This also lingers for a few seconds. Within the space of a few seconds a spider weaves a web. Spider is the mother of the art of weaving.

May be our lives are in fact comprises of few seconds. It has as short a span as a bullet’s echo or of a train’s screeching jolt. It has as short a span as that of a thud of an electric hammer. But those few seconds might  seem to us to be very long. And in the meantime the spider of the mind spins a complex web. That is what the world that we perceive. AnAAd it is our choices that weave the world that we perceive. Perhaps it is from that primordial sound that the creation is woven

A shiny thread is stretched out

In countless fleeting

Disappearing sounds

In other words the farther the source of the sound goes away there is the disappearing of the sound. And the more the sound gets feeble the more the shiny thread is out. Is this a spiritual extrapolation of the Doppler’s effect of physics?

May be the thunder clap might allude to the big bang.It is the sound that reminds of an asteroid falling upon the earth with a thud.May be the universe that we perceive began 13.8 billion years ago. But what has been created must be destroyed, may be, because of entropy. But this time span in the vision of the poet of a yogi is between the two ends of a thunder.

But the mind or the spider or the Buddha nature is never destroyed. Some scientists surmise that the big bang will take place again presently after the destruction of the universe. And once again between the two ends of thunder the spider or the Buddha nature will spin the universe. One’s birth and death are but the two ends of a thunder. The web spun by the spider may disappear with death But there will be a thunder again and the spider will reappear and spin the web again. The spider can be looked upon as tanha or the thirst of the being which does not die with the death and dissolution of the body.

A deeply philosophical and esoteric poem again.

Tĩnh lặng

12.
