I am lost in the world of toys
Boy and girl dolls
Smile next to a fish made of
wool
A wooden rooster
Stands firmly on one foot
A paper dolphin
Carries a tiny globe on its

All are immobile
In nothingness
The halos of dreams
Of humanities’ children
Those who are moving
In order to be natural, equal,
innocent
I am made of wool, paper,

(Translated from Vietnamese by Nhat-Lang Le & Susan Blanshard)
Explication
Children play with toys. Why do children play
with toys? When they are born they find the world dominated by adults. They
know that unless they are like adults they cannot get at power in the worldly
life into which they are born. So they imitate the adults play way. And the
toys help create a miniaturised representation of the world of the adults
before the children. The children have powers over their toys the way the
adults have power over the worldly things and situations. If a father is angry
with a child the child cannot resist his father. So in turn the child gets
angry with its toy. Thus the child some way sublimates its aggrieved soul.
Again the child becomes his or her father imitating the father who bullies him
or her, through bullying the toy. May be there could be myriads of other
situations faced by a child which could be handled in imagination with the aid
of toys. No wonder the adults are the child’s role model. But witnessing the
unreality of the make believe world peopled with toys whether the so called
real world of the adults are e qually unreal!
Now look at a child. A plan or chart lies at his
feet--some fragment of his understanding of life shaped by himself. It is a
wedding or a festival, a feast or a funeral. Reflections on a child’s play with
toys could lead us to myriads of conjectures as to why and how a child plays
with toys. But after all, it is the child alone who plays
with toys. That is the universal perception of the adults. Mind you, we are
adults our conversation could be understood by adults only, just as children
understand other children. But listen to our poet Mai Văn Phấn.
I am lost in the
world of toys
One asks--- What is it to be lost? It seems that the poet is so
immersed in the world of toys that the real world of the adult poet seems to
have ceased to exist. One asks -- what toys constitute the world of the poet? Boy and girls dolls. A doll is a small model of
human figure as a child’s toy A t the age of three a little boy seems to be
aware of the difference between a boy and girl.
Well Coleridge speaks of himself as transformed
into a three years child, for a time, in Ancient Mariner
He holds him with
his glittering eye
The wedding guest
stood still
And listens like a
three year child
The mariner hath
his will
The boy and girl dolls smile. Each child smiles
400 to 500 times a day. Because he/ she is happy. Happiness is a state of mind.
External factors such as wealth and power do not bring happiness in their
train. The children are happy with what they have. It is only when we are not satisfied and crave for more and
more we forget to smile. We become grouchy. And look at the fish. Because the
Chinese character for fish and the Chinese character for surplus are identical.
The fish stands for fine excess Yes, the little children do not yearn for this
man’s scope and that man’s talent. They
always smile at the never waning surplus of their inward wealth. The
smile of the children speak of their awareness of the fish and fine excess.
Especially koi fish. It goes up stream and reaches the mountain top only to be
a dragon-the most auspicious thing under the Sun. The fish in the neighbourhood
of the smiling dolls are however made of
wool. A wooden rooster stands firmly on one foot. A rooster is one of the
twelve signs of Chinese zodiac. It stands for yang principle. It drives away
the evil and hails the dawn. It stands for honesty morality and fortitude. The
rooster is standing on one leg. That is its other leg is hidden in its plumes.
This is a posture that the rooster is relaxed. Unless you are relaxed you
cannot have patience and fortitude. Besides the rooster on one leg suggests
that only a portion of reality is perceived by us mortals. And there is a
dolphin that carries a small globe on its head. This is a very curious image.
The dolphin stands for love and help. It rescues men from drowning and from the
attack of sharks over and over again. It stands for virtue. playfulness will
power humour wholeness and the like. The image of a miniature globe on dolphins
head might suggest that a time may come when virtue will rescue the earth from
being drowned in the boundless sea of sin.
Fine. What do the world of dolls and other toys
represent? The smile, the fish, the rooster, and the dolphin suggest the world
as it could be made. In other words the present poem brims with compassion and
goodwill of the poet.
But the poet knows that there is no substance in
this worldly existence even if it were made of the stuff of dream. Substance
implies something which is independent of anything else. The boy and girl are
dolls. The rooster is wooden. The dolphin is made of paper. Thus anything and
everything whatever in dreams or in the mundane world is made of something
else. This dependent origination of all that we perceive or dream of in the
existence posits that nothing is permanent
and nothing has essence. And hence as soon as the poet perceives our
mundane world as toy world he is plunged into the awareness of nothingness. Nothingness
alone exists. Anything else that we perceive with our senses is moonshine and
myth. That which appears to move is but immobile. On the surface we find the
world ever moving and ever changing under the impact of Time. But the poet
experiences the timeless changeless nothing.
All are immobile
In nothingness
The halos of dreams
Of humanities’ children
Those who are moving
But with those of us who live in the contingent
the toy world is natural and the vision of the Nothing is supra natural. Just
as the Buddhas who belong to the Nothing or sunya or Void have their
nirmanakaya similarly our seer poet dons an appearance made of wool paper wood etc.
In other words the Nothing is not empty. It brims
with the possibility of appearances on n levels. This Nothing is different from
the perception of the absurd playwright of Endgame. Furthermore the poem defines
a poet as a Buddha in the making, trailing clouds of glory and measureless
truth from the Void.

điềm may mắn nhất trên đời.
